Edward Elliot’s Beach- a sandy shore for rejuvenation
Elliot’s beach, commonly called as Besant Nagar Beach or “Bessie”, is named after Edward Elliot, Governor of Madras. This beach is in Besant Nagar, Chennai. It marks the terminal-point of the Marina Beach.
The Velankanni Shrine and the Ashthalakshmi Temple are located adjacent to the beach, wherein the former is dedicated to Mother Mary and the latter is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. Apart from being a tourist spot for tourists, pilgrims also come here and then visit the holy places nearby. Hence, restaurants, shops, hotels are in this locality to attract large crowds. Moreover, the beach turns out to be a shooting spot for Kollywood movies too.
A well-known attraction in the beach is the “Karl Schmidt Memorial”. It is marked in remembrance of the Dutch Sailor, who lost his life, in the act of saving a drowning swimmer.
As this beach is ideal for jogging and long walks, hence it is claimed to be the biggest asset to the residents of Besant Nagar. Moreover, the couples and family crowd largely spend quality time here in the evenings in this sandy shore, enjoying the cool breeze and by immersing their feet in the sparkling sea water.
