THE LUZ CHURCH– Redeemer of the Friars
Church of Our Lady of Light is a Roman Catholic Church in Chennai, India. It is also known as Luz Church, the name Luz being derived from the Portuguese name Nossa Senhora da Luz. It is one of the oldest churches of the bustling Metropolitan city. Moreover, it is also claimed to be one of the oldest European Monuments in India.
The history of the Church is interlinked with the arrival of the Portuguese to India. As soon as Vasco Da Gama, discovered the sea route to India, a group of missionaries (Friars) left to Calicut. Some of these people travelled down South, wherein they were left to face the wrath of the sea during their journey. Not knowing what to do, they immediately looked up to Mother Mary. It is believed that they were miraculously led by an inexplicable bright light which brought them safe to land. In order to extend their gratitude of love to Mother Mary, they built the Church of Our Lady of Light.
The building’s architecture consists of patterns of Gothic arches, Baroque ornamentation clubbed with traditional European style. The altars are coated with silver and gold leaves and the ceilings with powder blue fresco paintings.
One of the important festivals of this church is “The feast of Our Lady of Light”. This feast is commemorated with a splendid mass and car cavalcade.
