Kalakshetra– A divine place of Arts
Kalakshetra Foundation is a centre for learning arts. It mainly emphasises on Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music. It was founded in 1936 in order that India may once again revive and develop its culture and set a standard of true Art in its new life after freedom. It seeks to build the character of the young and to create a true centre of international understanding and learning through the universal language of arts.
Kalakshetra later acclaimed as “Kalakshetra Foundation” was founded by Smt. Rukmini Arundale and Dr. George Arundale in January 1936. It was Smt. Rukmini Devi’s dream to create not a mere academy of arts, but a great community which prevailed in earlier days. Hence, she brought together under one roof many great legends and incredible artists.
Today’s Kalakshetra stands majestic with many units under it. They are:
- The College of Fine Arts.
- Besant Arundale School
- Besant Theosophical High School
- Craft Education and Research Centre
The College of Fine Arts offers Full time Diploma courses in Dance, Music, Instruments and Fine arts and Post Diploma Courses in Music and dance. Moreover, Part time courses are offered for Music, Dance and Instruments 3 days per week between 4:30pm and 5:30pm.
On the whole, Kalakshetra not merely inculcates the right attitude to art, but also the right attitude to life so that the Youth will be of great value to our Nation.
